Page 1 of 4 A few weeks ago I found myself enjoying a few days with my wife in Sedona Arizona. I've always wanted to hike some of the trails in that area so I decided to take advantage of the situation and find a short trail that would give me some nice red rock views. The manager at the Bed & Breakfast we were staying in suggested a trail called Little Horse Trail. I was looking for something that was relatively flat, not too crowded, and provided good opportunities to see the incredible rock formations up close. He said that Little Horse Trail would work perfect for what I wanted.
The Little Horse Trailhead is off of highway 179 about 3 miles south of the intersection of highway 179 and highway 89A in Sedona. The trailhead parking lot is on the east side of 179. It is only one or two turnouts south of the famous Sedona Chapel Of The Holy Cross (and there are lots of signs for that). This trailhead is also one of the trailheads for hiking to and around Bell Rock. From the trailhead turn right and follow the wide trail. After about 1/4 mile a smaller trail splits off to the left. This is the Little Horse Trail. It heads back into the red rock toward Chicken Point and then returns. The trail is fairly flat with a few ups and downs. For most of the trail you have great views of the red rock. After about a mile you can see the Chapel Of The Holy Cross as it sits up on the side of the mountain you are hiking around. Somewhere on the Little Horse Trail there is a side trail that heads to the chapel. I never did find that trail. Below are some pictures I took along the way. I am definitely looking forward to another trip back to the Sedona area for some more hiking. |
