Arizona seems to have a lot of people interested in cattle ranching.  I'm not sure why. It seems too hot.  This dirt field is actually a dried up watering hole for cows.  You can't tell, but I'm standing on a man-made dam that is blocking the stream up.  This creates the watering hole.  One small problem, there's no water in the stream.  I wonder if the guys who made the dam realized that...

This was the best looking Pear cactus I saw on this hike.  Most of the Pear cacti were withered up and yellow.  Apparently there hasn't been as much rain in this region as normal so things are pretty dried out.

Although Saguaro cacti can get to be very tall (50 feet?), their roots are not deep.  Here are the roots from a Saguaro that had fallen over next to the trail.  This particular cactus was probably about 10 feet tall.

Here are some more multi-armed cacti -- and my dad.  He's multi-armed too.

A tall Saguaro.

This is a Barrel cactus.  I'm not sure when these flower. Proabaly earlier in the year.  I saw a few flowers on some of these during the hike.

A close up of the same cactus.
