About 1.5 miles into the hike we were expecting to come up to a gate.  This is it.  The trail only continues on another 0.8 miles after this.

These two pictures show Lake Pleasant in the distance.  This lake is a popular place for people from Phoenix during the weekends.  It is less than an hour from the city but provides a lot of water sport activities.

It's hard to see in this picture but the desert in the background is actually across a deep ravine. At this point the trail heads to the right and continues down into that ravine (probably 200 feet down).

This is my dad heading down the trail into the ravine.
