The Mammoth Book of Fantasy is yet another anthology that I read. This time, I'm happy to say, there were a few stories in the collection that I thought were interesting. Many of the stories in the book were not what I would call fantasy though. That's probably because I have a limited or narrow definition of fantasy. I think that I should really be looking at "heroic" or "epic" fantasy.
There were over two dozen stories taken from both the 19th and 20th centuries. It was nice to see some of the old stuff (MacDonald) right along with the new stuff. I was surprised to find some stories that apparently are classified as fantasy. In particular, there was a story that reminded my of the old Tarzan stories. I guess that's fantasy. It certainly isn't reality. Then there was a story about a guy who found himself outside of time -- very much along the lines of the movie "The Truman Show". I'm glad I read this collection but I think my taste for the fantasy genre is waning. I am going to start looking at some other books to read now. |
