I read this book once before back when I was in high school. I found it just an entertaining this time as I did back then. Maybe the writing is a little bit clumsy but I also think that this was Brooks's first book. (Maybe I'm wrong on that, I don't know for sure). I plan to read the others in the Shannara series but I haven't yet.
This book is basically a knock off of Tolkien. Back in the late 70's and early 80's The Lord Of The Rings became immensely popular. Eager authors jumped on the hobbit bandwagon and produced a large number of epic fantasy style trilogies. The Shannara series was one such example. While the authors were eager to capitalize on the genre, readers were just as eager to gobble up the books. It was a win-win situation.

Fans of the 80's fantasy novel will want to read this book and the rest of the series. While Tolkien was "genre defining", Brooks is "genre refining".
