Prime is one of those movies I would have rather not seen. It was certainly not worth the price of admission to the theater. It is a love triangle involving one man and two women. The man, it turns out, is really not much more than a boy (23 years old), one of the women is the 37 year old love interest and the other woman is the boy's mother. She also happens to be the woman's therapist. The point of the movie is summarized in one of the therapists monologues: "sometimes you love, you learn, and then you move on". That was what was so annoying about this movie. No substance. Just one big fling, with a bunch of awkward moments, that in the end turned out to be nothing.
At first neither of the women know the others' relationship to the boy. The situation is supposed to be funny to the audience as we see the two women acting in ways we know they wouldn't act if they had full knowledge. Of course, eventually the women find out and then things get ugly. The supposed comedy occurs at the expense of traditional values which is something I seldom think is funny. It's not that I appreciate and am defensive of the particular values being mocked, it's that I don't like making fun of people because they believe differently than I do.
We went to the movie looking for a fun romantic comedy but walked away feeling very disappointed. This movie is for single women who have a penchant for bittersweet stories, feel a tinge of angst towards all the mother-in-laws in the world, and harbor resentment towards the big bad world that conspires against their lofty romantic goals. If that's not you, you won't like the movie.
