I like dill pickles and I like chocolate peanut butter ice cream. Not together, of course, that delicacy is reserved for pregnant women. But things are pretty jarring if I take a bite of a pickle when I was expecting ice cream, or the other way around. At first I don't like the taste but then after a few seconds I realize what I'm tasting and I like it.
This happens sometimes with movies. I am expecting one thing and it turns out to be different. At first I don't like it but later, once I'm realigned to the new perspective, I like it.
The other night we saw a sneak preview of the new Jennifer Garner movie Thirteen Going On Thirty. I don't know what exactly I was expecting but it wasn't what I got. The movie was funny and cute, especially if you were a thirteen year old girl in the mid 80's. Then it would be even more funny. Unfortunately I wasn't ever a thirteen year old girl.
To be honest, a lot of the jokes went over my head. Most everyone else at the show seemed to get the jokes but I didn't. So I felt a bit like the odd man out. So that probably affected my enjoyment of the movie.
I would like to see the movie again and this time with different expectations. It will probably be better.
