Digging ditches Print
Written by Mike Noel

ImageAfter outlining the property the builder has to dig several ditches under the foundation.  Here in Arizona the foundations for homes are usually concrete slabs.  In other parts of the country homes will be built on a raised foundation that provides a crawl space under the house.  Since slab homes don't have a foundation, the build has to dig ditches and lay the sewer and plumbing lines under ground before the slab is poured.

These pictures show a bit of the ditch digging that was done for our house.  The sewer lines are gravity fed so the ditches are deepest at the street where the house sewer lines connect to the main.  The ground in this area is quite hard and layered with rock.  This will be a bit of a problem for us when it's time to dig out the pool.

This second picture shows some of the piping that is laid into the ditches.  Once all of the piping is down the builder will fill all the ditches back up and level out the lot again.
