Yesterday I attended a local career fair as an exhibitor. The company I work for is looking for a few software and hardware engineers. As each prospective candidate came up to our table we explained our requirements: C#, .Net, and GUI development experience. Most jobseekers turned away discouraged because they didn't have those skills. It was clear that those were the skills that most of the employers there were looking for in software developers. So I guess that at this point in time, C# is the language of choice for employable software developers.
This trend will probably not stay around forever though. Back in the late 80's and early 90's we all were expected to know C. Then by the mid 90's the desired skill set moved to C++. By the early 00's Java was gaining a foothold. But now it seems that C# is the winner. I suspect that 10 years from now there will be something else.
