This afternoon I had a lunch meeting with four lawyers and I learned something. Lawyers like to talk a lot. But it's not mindless conversation. It's conversation about details and law and policy and all that kind of stuff that most of us would find boring. They don't find it boring. To be honest, it was rather intriguing. It seems that being a lawyer is all about understanding the details both of law and of the situation at hand. It's about knowing history of other cases. It's about figuring out how to get a situation to conform to certain rules in order to get the desired outcome. It's a game.
Just listening to the guys talk and participating in their conversation made me realize that there are some interesting aspects to being a lawyer. There's no doubt that they have earned their bad reputation -- probably a few notorious examples have cast a bad light on the whole group. Despite that, it does seem like an interesting line of work.
