Last night a friend came over and helped me upgrade the memory in my wife's laptop. We went from 256MB to 1GB. It's amazing what a difference that makes. I've known theoretically how low memory leads to slow machine performance but I don't think I've seen such a drastic improvement before. Part of the reason for this was that with only 256MB of memory in a modern PC the machine is almost always swapping out to the hard disk. So everything you do requires a lot of extra time. With more physical memory her laptop is much better off.
I'm not really a hardware guy so any sort of hardware change on a computer seems a bit intimidating at first. But changing the memory in a laptop has got to be one of the easiest things I've ever seen on a computer. Just unscrew the panel and stick new memory in. I wish it was that easy on a desktop.
