Non-reading Adults Print

A recent article describes how 25% of adult (Americans, I think) didn't read a single book last year. That is crazy. Why would so many adults choose not to read even one book the entire year? There is so much more to reading than just being entertained. Reading helps to keep you mind alert. It helps increase your vocabulary. It expands your ability to think.
TV and movies are a poor substitute for reading a book. On a superficial level they both accomplish the same thing. They both can tell a story or educate about a topic. But the similarity is only superficial. Books are usually much more detailed and in depth. This topic has been talked to death many times over so there's no real need to go into it now.
The article didn't say that those 25% of adults didn't read anything. In fact, it implied that they are reading magazines and stuff on the internet. The shorter articles appeal to readers more because they can get the benefit of reading something interesting while only take a few minutes of their time and attention.
As book-illiteracy slowly worms it's way into our culture I am afraid we will continue to see a decline in the quality of the books being written now. If there is no one reading books then there will not be a need for authors. I am saddened by this. But that's just me.
