The other day I found a great online tool for developing and improving your vocabulary. The site is Verbocity.com. The site works for grade levels 2-12 (and level 99 for "all" words). The master word list is a list of about 9000 words that were generated from millions of words of text that the group was able to find. They claim that English has about 600,000 words but that most of those words are specific to certain domains (such as technology or medicine). Instead of learning all 600,000 words they have defined the top 9000 that make a "professional vocabulary".
The learning exercises and retention tests seem effective and interesting. I've been using the site for a bit over a week and am quite happy with it. We'll see what happens as I continue to use it.
