#4 Use closed captioning
Most shows broadcast on television include closed captioning information. If your television is capable of displaying CC text (most modern televisions are, you have to find the correct setting in your unit's setup system) then you can save some electricity by muting the television speaker while watching a show. With the closed captioning you can still enjoy the show and rack up a savings of close to 1 cent per month!
#5 Switch off your nightlights
Nightlights are a convenient device to help us see where we're walking in the middle of the night. But this little mechanism to keep us from stubbing our toes comes at a price. Standard nightlight bulbs burn a whopping 4 watts of power. If you have 2 of these in your house running 10 hours a night you will use approximately 12 cents a month.
#6 Avoid your electric can opener
Electric can openers are another convenience item that can be done without during the high electricity bill season. These devices might save you a little elbow grease but they really take it to your bill. Choosing to use an old fanshioned hand-cranking can opener can save you almost 1 cent per month.
#7 Unplug your VCRs, DVD players and stereos
Have you ever noticed how hard it is to set the time correctly on your VCR, DVD player or stereo? Not only is it annoying to see that flashing display, it is wasting energy. In order to get this display to stop you have to unplug the device. When you aren't using any of these devices simply unplug it and you'll save nearly 1 cent a month in wasted electricity.
