#8 Don't rewind your VHS tapes
The video stores tell you to "Be kind, rewind" but sometimes we have to dispence with such niceties. A movie can take up to 5 minutes two rewind and during that time it is drawing power and adding to your electric bill. The best option is to simply not rewind the movie. The movie rental store is better equipped to handle this task. Depending on how many movies you rent, avoiding rewinding can save you almost 1 cent per month.
#9 Use only battery powered clocks
Another big electricity user in our homes are the alarms clocks that sit quietly and innocently next to our beds. These little devices consume power all day long yet we ignore them most of the day (they are in our bedrooms afterall). To save significantly put a battery in the clock and unplug it. If you have just two of these clocks in the house this simple step can save you 2 cents per month.
#10 Cut back on microwave popcorn
Cooking a single bag of microwave popcorn requires approximately 1/2 a cent. Merely cutting out 4 bags of popcorn a month can save 2 cents off of your monthly electricity bill. All through out history people have made sacrifices during times of need. Giving up 4 bags of microwave popcorn a month isn't really that big of a sacrifice.
The final tally
If you are able to take advantage of each of these suggestions you can take a little over $1 off of each month's electricity bill. The truly adventurous can apply these techniques year round and save over $12 per year. Woohoo!
