Unregister Component Released Print
Written by Mike Noel

The Unregister component is a Joomla plugin that allows users on a site to unregister themselves from that site. An associated module puts a link on the sidebar that gives users access to this component. After almost a year (yeah, it's pitiful) I have finally converted the code base over to the Joomla development environment and made a release under this system. There are no new features to the component but now that I have the new system setup I will soon be adding features that some users have requested. The component and module are available for download from the Unregister project page or go directly to the download page.

Unregister component

The Unregister component provides a very simple interface to allow site members to unregister from the site. The interface requires that the user be logged in. It requests the user's current password to verify that the correct user is being unregistered. The component removes the user from the Joomla membership tables. Any content that has been authored, modified, or checked out by the user is reassigned to the admin user.

Unregister module

The Unregister module is a simple module that provides a link to the Unregister component. This makes it easier for site administrators to place a link to unregistration somewhere other than in their menu. The module is not required for the Unregister component to work.

Future features

The following features are on the roadmap to be added to the Unregister component:
  • Internationalization using language files -- Currently the component is hard-coded with English text and messages. A new version will use the Joomla internationalization techniques to make this component more flexible.
  • Email admin on unregistration -- Adding this feature will cause Unregister to send an email message to the site admin whenever a user unregisters.
  • Add an option "reason for unregistration" input -- This will add an extra input box on the unregistration form to allow users to provide a reason for their leaving. This reason will be included in the email message to the admin.
  • Third party integration -- We are looking at ways to have the Unregister component propagate a user's unregistration request to third party components that have been installed on a particular site.

Feedback appreciated

If you have any questions or comments concerning the Unregister component or module please use the "Contact Us" link to send feedback.

It would be great if you could make this component work with Community Builder. What do you think?

I am starting to look at how Community Builder works and what it takes to integrate Unregister with it. Currently Unregister can be used on a site with Community Builder but user's who unregister won't automatically be unregistered from Community Builder. Instead, the site admin needs to run the Synchronize Users tool to clean up the removed users. I think this can be run just every once in a while.

There are the installation xml files in the downloaded file. Both the module and the component can be installed using the standard Joomla installers.

You should be able to take the tar.gz file that you download from the download site and give that directly to the Joomla installer. The XML install file is inside that bundle. If you are still having problems contact me using the contact button above and we can work on this in email.

Hi
I'm trying to install the component and I get a "Parse error: parse error, unexpected $end in D:\wamp\www\AQM\components\com_unregister\unregister.html.php on line 33" (last line of the file, which only shows "?>")

Do you have any clue about what could be the cause? I tried both 2.0 and 2.1 and get the same error on the last line of the unregister.html.php file.

My site is currently running under Wamp (similar to Xampp), with the end user interface in French.

Thank you for any help on this matter.

That is strange. I haven't seen that problem before. My first thought is that your zip file of the component is corrupted but you said you tried both 2.0 and 2.1.

It is possible that when you ftp the file up to the server (using the Joomla installer) that it gets corrupted? Using a Windows server might not do the upload as binary.

Did you try manually uploaded the files and then installing from a local dir instead of installing using the zip?

My site is not on the Web yet, it's all local using Wamp. I downloaded the .tar files and installed them from the Joomla installer. It does not seem to be corrupt because I am able to edit all files once installed and they look just fine. I'll continue to work around... Thanks!

Interesting. Do you mind sending me your copy of that file and I can do some comparisons (you can use the contact me link)

I am about to migrate my Joomla site from a local installation to a real Web server. I will resume the troubleshooting then and get back to you if it still does not work. You'll be able to try it on-line after the migration... Thanks!

So as I mentioned earlier, my site is now migrated on a web server, and the component now works flawlessly. I guess there was a problem using it on a local installation with a server emulation software (Wamp, Xampp, or Lamp for that matter). Thanks for your help and for this very useful component!

Great. I'm glad it's working well.
latina - Unregistered page without menu Registered | 2007-05-31 05:07:25
Hi i have installed unregistered and i had to add the menus and logos of my site manually cause they were not shown, in the unregister page, the problem i am facing is now that the ( you ha been uregistered from this site page) is neither showing the menus and logos of my site, moreover the URL of that page is not a firnly one and i do not know how to add manually the menus to this page cause this page is no to be found in the module site section

I hoop somebody can give a hint in which file should i look for to add the menus to this page
mike Super Administrator | 2007-05-31 07:35:09
I'm not sure what menus you are referring to. If you mean your normal Joomla! menus then I don't think that has anything to do with Joomla!. The Unregister component just acts like any other component. The location of your menu(s) and logo should be specified with your template. Unregister uses the site template without any problem.
