10 Christians Everyone Should Know

This book is a collection of 10 mini-biographies of notable historical figures.  The list includes a diverse set of subjects ranging from Galileo to Bach.  All of the individuals were devoted Christians and each biography gives an overview of their accomplishments while showing how faith was central to their character and actions.

The selection on Galileo was particularly interesting to me. Galileo was strong in his faith but non-conventional.  For example, he and his "wife" lived together as a married couple but they were never officially married. This, of course, would be considered scandalous to today's Christian.  He was also a man of science and stood up against the Church when his scientific observations didn't match what the Church was teaching.  The primary debate was concerning the nature of the solar system.  The traditional view was that the Earth was the center of the universe and everything revolved around it.  This traditional view was based on specific interpretations of portions of the Bible.  Galileo (and others) continued to propose that this model of the universe was incorrect.  They proposed instead that the Earth spun and revolved around the Sun.  I found the debate to be quite interesting.  Particularly when I see the parallels between that and the current debate about evolution and human origins.

Most of the other biographies were also very interesting and revealing about different historical figures that we've heard about since we were children.  This book is farily light reading.  I recommend it to anyone who is curious about the individuals covered by the book.  It is not going to provide an in depth biography but it will open the door to an interesting life.

I received this book as a part of the booksneeze.com blogger program.
